One of my favorite ways to sleep at night is by a warm, crackling fire. Since I don’t have a real fireplace (yet!), I put a fake fire right in my bedroom and I listen to real fireplace sounds on YouTube.
I usually set up a queue on YouTube that starts with a guided sleep meditation (otherwise my brain won’t shut the fuck up). The next item in the queue would be the fireplace sounds, which will play all night. As I wake up in the night, I am greeted by the sounds of a crackling wood fire and the dancing glow of my fake fire on the wall. I especially love that the firelight is red/yellow/orange, so it casts a soft, warm glow without the blue light that disrupts sleep.
I found my fake fire when I was cleaning out my mother’s house. It’s just an electric fireplace insert with fake flame effects. There are a lot of really ugly and awful fireplace inserts out there, so it might take some effort to find a good one. I am NOT recommending this one (and that is not an affiliate link)…but for the sake of reference, it is similar to mine in that it casts dancing flames onto the wall behind it. That’s essential to me. Fake logs with a pulsing red light that is supposed to look like hot embers just won’t cut it.
Also, beware of the heating bill you will amass if you run a fake fire to heat your room!! These things can get wildly expensive pulling 1500W. So make sure that you find one that does the “fire” by itself, with no heat.
For the crackling fireplace sounds, my favorite creator is Ilia Emelianov at FOBOS PLANET. Don’t be fooled by imitators (I’m looking at you, Fobos Fire…). FOBOS PLANET is the real deal. He’s not taking five minutes of fireplace footage and looping it. (I’m not saying Fobos Fire does that, just that it’s a copycat name). Ilia sets up his camera in front of an actual fireplace and lets it sit there LIVE for hours on end. He has even made “behind the scenes” videos (like this one) showing how he does it. He typically has around 3,000 people at a time watching his fireplace live on YouTube.
His YouTube channel has some additional playlists and content creators he likes, such as outdoor fires and exotic locations. I appreciate that he supports other creators.
